The Last Sound in Group 3: A Guide to the Phonics B Sound

Every Jolly Phonics group ends somewhere, and for Group 3 (g o u l f b) the final stop is /b/ — the sound that closes out g, o, u, l, f and b before children move on to digraphs like /ai/.

This guide covers the phonics b sound in full: how to say it correctly, the Jolly Phonics action, word lists and a free worksheet, for children around age 4 to 5 in Reception or kindergarten.

How to Make the /b/ Sound

/b/ is a voiced stop: the lips press together, then release with the voice already switched on. Keep it short — say “b,” never “buh.” Pretend to swing a bat and hit a ball while saying “b, b, b” for the Jolly Phonics action, or try a two-beat chant: “Bat hits ball, b-b-b,” timed to the swing.

/b/ vs /p/: The Voiced Twin Test

/b/ and /p/ are made in exactly the same place in the mouth — both press the lips together — so the only real difference is the voice. Rest two fingers on the throat: /b/ makes it buzz, while /p/ is just a silent puff of air. It’s also worth knowing that b, d and p are the three letter shapes children mix up most often on paper, simply because they are mirror images of each other; that is a writing issue, not a listening one, and it usually sorts itself out with more reading practice.

A Short /b/ Story

Julia’s mom was doing the laundry, and Julia begged to help. “You can wash this one shirt in the little bucket,” her mom said, handing her some soapy water. The moment Julia dunked the shirt in, it started to bubble and gurgle — “b, b, b, b” — and she giggled so hard her mom had to come see what was so funny.

  • Flashcard blending (4 minutes): point at the three cards below in turn and blend the sounds into a word together.

Building a /b/ Word Bank

Beginning: boy, bat, bit, bag, bed, big, box, bun

Middle: rabbit, table, cabin, robot, elbow, number

End: cab, rub, web, tub, cub, rob, crab, job

Blend it: b-a-t → bat, b-i-g → big, c-a-b → cab, t-u-b → tub

Watch out: comb, climb, lamb and thumb all have a silent b — it’s written but never heard.

Frequently asked questions

What age do children learn the phonics b sound?

Most children meet /b/ in Reception or kindergarten, around age 4 to 5, as the last sound in Jolly Phonics Group 3.

How can I tell if my child is saying /b/ or /p/?

Ask them to rest two fingers on their throat while saying the sound. If it buzzes, it’s /b/; if it’s silent, it’s /p/.

Why does my child write b, d and p backwards?

These three letters are mirror images of one another, so reversing them on paper is a normal part of early writing and is unrelated to how well a child can hear or say the sounds.

Are there words where b is silent?

Yes — comb, climb, lamb and thumb all contain a silent b that is written but never pronounced.
