Off she ran, and soon she met Henny Penny.
“Where are you going in such a hurry?”
“The sky is falling! A piece of it hit me on the head!”
“Goodness me!” said Henny Penny. “Then I shall come too.”
So Chicken Little and Henny Penny ran on together, and soon they met Ducky Lucky.
“Where are you going in such a hurry?”
“The sky is falling! A piece of it hit Chicken Little on the head!”
“Goodness me!” said Ducky Lucky. “Then I shall come too.”
And on they ran, and soon they met Goosey Loosey — and then Turkey Lurkey — and every single one of them said “Goodness me!” and joined the parade. Not one of them stopped to ask Chicken Little what the piece of sky had actually looked like.
A Very Helpful Fox
Round the next bend stood Foxy Loxy, with a slow smile.
“Where are you all going in such a hurry?”
“The sky is falling! We must go and tell the king!”
“How dreadful,” said Foxy Loxy. “Luckily, I know a shortcut to the king. Follow me — through this dark little hole here…”
And the whole flustered flock would have followed him straight into his den — if a wise old owl had not called down from a branch.
“Stop!” hooted the owl. “Chicken Little — did you look up?”
Chicken Little went very quiet. “…No,” she admitted.
“Then look now,” said the owl. And they all looked — at the oak tree, at the acorns hanging thick on every branch, and at one little brown acorn lying in the grass exactly where Chicken Little had been standing.
The sky was not falling at all. Foxy Loxy slunk away with an empty tummy, and the birds walked home feeling rather silly — and from that day on, whenever something bonked Chicken Little on the head, the first thing she did was look up.
