How do you teach a child to write the letter M?

Start with sound, then shape, then strokes, then trace, then independent writing. Say the M sound and a key word ('Moon'). Show both uppercase M and lowercase m, and tell your child M looks like 'two mountains.' Demonstrate each stroke in order on the worksheet, then have your child trace dotted Ms following the arrows. Finish by writing 3-4 Ms on blank lined paper. Count the humps out loud — 'one hump, two humps, stop' — to prevent the common error of adding an extra hump. Keep sessions short — 10 to 15 minutes daily — and praise effort over perfection.

What is the correct stroke order for uppercase M?

Start at the top line on the LEFT. Pull a straight line DOWN to the baseline. Pull a diagonal UP-RIGHT to the middle. From the middle, pull a diagonal DOWN-RIGHT to the baseline. Pull a straight line UP from the baseline to the top. Four strokes: down, up-right, down-right, up. The two top points should reach the top line; the V-dip in the middle should reach the baseline.

What is the correct stroke order for lowercase m?

Start at the midline (m is a short letter). Pull a straight line DOWN to the baseline. Retrace UP a small amount, then arch UP-OVER-DOWN to the baseline (first hump). Retrace UP again, then arch UP-OVER-DOWN to the baseline (second hump). Three down-strokes joined by two arches. Stop at two humps — three humps makes it look like 'mn' or 'mmm'.

What words start with the letter M?

Common kid-friendly words that start with M include Moon, Mouse, Monkey, Mom, Milk, Mango, Map, Magnet, and Mountain. After your child traces the worksheet, play 'find the M' around the house — point to Mom, find Milk in the fridge, look for the Moon at night. This connects the written letter to real-world objects, which deepens learning far more than worksheets alone. 'Mom' is often the first word a child can read and write — leverage that.

How do I help my child tell M apart from W?

M and W are mirror images: M has two points pointing UP (mountains), W has two points pointing DOWN (valleys). Teach this rhyme: 'M is mountains, points UP to the sky. W is water, splashes DOWN low.' If your child writes M upside down (looking like W), the cause is usually starting at the wrong place — make sure they start at the TOP-LEFT, not the bottom. Practice writing M and W side by side so the contrast is visible.
