Every autumn a child in my class asks the same question while holding a pumpkin: where did it come from? These free pumpkin life cycle worksheets answer it step by step. Children follow one plant through six stages, seed, sprout, seedling, vine, flower and pumpkin, and they do it with a pencil, scissors and glue instead of just listening.
There are ten black and white pages, a handy pumpkin life cycle printable pack for preschool, kindergarten and first grade. Each page is a separate PDF, so print only what you need.

How to Teach the Six Stages
Bring in a real pumpkin before any paper comes out. Cut it open on a tray and let children touch the pulp and pick out the seeds. Then walk around the poster together: seed, sprout, seedling, vine, flower, pumpkin. Say the words and clap the syllables.
Next, try the cut and paste and numbering pages. They show quickly whether a child understands order. A child who puts the flower after the pumpkin is telling you something, so go back to the poster and follow the arrows.
Labeling and tracing come last because they ask for spelling. Keep the word bank on the table and let beginners point instead of write.
Ideas for Centers and Home
The seed counting page makes a quick math center. Put real pumpkin seeds beside it and let children count out the same number before writing. The wheel is my favorite craft here. It needs a brad, so supervise the poking and keep spare circles handy.
On the last page, children draw each stage and write a word or two. For more counting, try our fall math worksheets.
Differentiating for Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade
For preschool, stay with the poster, cut and paste and seed counting. Kindergarten children can number, label and finish first, next, last. First graders can write full sentences on the drawing page.
